I love taking part in literary events and festivals. I also visit schools, libraries and bookshops. I give readings, interactive talks and I run writing workshops. I live in the south and can visit you if I can travel to your organisation and back in a day. I'm happy to travel further afield if you will pay for my travelling expenses and any overnight accommodation.

Here are some of the sessions I hold. I'm flexible, so if you have something different in mind then please ask me about it.

Sharing Stories

  • Suitable for pre-school and reception.
  • Content - I read my books with the children and share story related artifacts.
  • I can also offer craft type sessions such as making tiger masks or pop-up cards

Interactive Talk

  • Suitable for all ages and tailored to suit the group.
  • Content – How I came to writing, how a book is made, where ideas come from, the writing process, the publisher’s role in creating the final product.
  • I use a power point presentation and end with a question and answer session.

Writing Workshops

Writing workshops are tailored to the age, ability and size of the group. A typical session could be spent writing a story together, creating characters, writing dialogue or planning a story that will keep the reader hooked from beginning to end.

For adults I can give tips on increasing your chance of getting your work accepted for publication.

FAQ’s

How many children/adults will you talk to at each session?
I’ll talk to as many people as you want me to.  If I’m working in a school then a class at a time is ideal but I often speak to a whole year group. Writing workshops work best if the group sizes aren’t too large. Please contact me to discuss your requirements.

Do you need a room to work in?
I prefer to stay in one place. I’m used to working in halls, libraries, music rooms, huts and spare classrooms.

Do you need any other resources?
A small table to put things on, a flip chart for writing workshops, a computer and screen. I’m always grateful of a cup of coffee at break time!

Will you bring copies of your books to sell?
I don’t sell books but will happily sign any books, (written by me), if children and staff want to bring them in when I visit. I’m also happy for you to organise book sales. Local bookshops can often provide books on a sale or return basis and some even offer a discount.

We have a book fair in school. Will you stay behind and sign books?
Yes, with pleasure.

How much will a visit cost?
My rates are in line with those recommended by the Society of Authors. http://www.societyofauthors.org/ There is no charge for events held at bookshops.

A visit can be a session, half a day or a whole day. Please e-mail, without obligation, for a quotation stating the school or organisation that you are representing. My email is author@juliesykes.co.uk
